On 22 June, Joe Louis (also known as the Brown Bomber) defeated James J. Braddock and became the world heavyweight boxing champion. Louis’ next fight pitted him against German champion Max Schmeling, a bout that was cast as a battle between American democracy and Nazism. Louis emerged victorious and was lauded as a national hero, thus making Louis one of the first black athletes to be accepted by whites. He was a path-breaking figure for his ability to transcend the black/white divide in the segregated United States.
