On 19 April 1995, Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols exploded a homemade bomb in the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The blast killed a total of 168 persons and injured over 500. Both Nichols and McVeigh were former US soldiers and had ties to right-wing militant organization, the Patriots. McVeigh averred that the bombing was a response to the federal government’s killing of 70 persons in Waco, Texas in 1993. Nichols was later sentenced to life in prison and McVeigh was sentenced to death. He was executed in 2001.
