On 17 May 1954, the US Supreme Court ruled that segregation in public schools was unconstitutional (Brown v. Board of Education). Violence subsequently broke out in the U.S. South. Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas, attempted to block the introduction of blacks into Little Rock public schools. In response, President Dwight D. Eisenhower dispatched Federal Troops to uphold the law. SAME AS 6316
