National Guardsmen, called out by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus on 4 September, barred 9 black students from entering an all-white high school in Little Rock. On 21 September, Faubus complied with federal court orders to remove the Guardsmen, but the blacks were ordered to withdraw by local authorities. President Eisenhower sent federal troops to Little Rock on 24 September to enforce the court order.
