Ukrainian almanacs emerged in the 1830s as the leading institution contributing to the establishment of modern national Ukrainian literature during the Romantic era. An optimal platform for literary socialization and entrepreneurship among a young generation of Ukrainian intellectuals and writers, they served as a bridge between authors and readers in creating an autonomous Ukrainian literary and cultural space within a broader imperial sphere of cultural production.
Unlike North American farmers’ almanacs of a calendrical and practical nature, Ukrainian almanacs in their format and design followed the European almanacs of the muses (French and German) or English keepsakes.
