Corpus stylistics is a field of study that unites stylistics with corpus linguistics, the branch of linguistics which employs computational analysis to a database (or “corpus”) of naturally occurring language (from speech and writing). In each corpus, texts have been tagged or “annotated” for the purposes of linguistic study. While some researchers use the term “corpus stylistics” as a sub-discipline of literary stylistics, others (such as Semino and Short, 2004) use the term more generally and include news reports and autobiographies in their work. Like other areas of stylistics, corpus stylistics involves empirical methods and subjective interpretation.
