Kwani?

is a Kenyan literary journal created in 2003 by a group of Kenyan writers and intellectuals who felt the need to foster creativity and revitalise East-African literature, opening up new directions for its development. Caine Prize winner Binyavanga Wainaina (for “Discovering Home” in 2002) used the money from the award to launch the project with the financial support of the American Ford Foundation. The journal is published by Kwani Trust, which has so far published nine issues. Kwani Trust also publishes a variety of books and organises literary events such as open mics and literary festivals. Kwani Trust is currently funded by the Ford Foundation, the Stichting Doen and the Lambent foundation. The journal’s current editor is Kenyan journalist and writer Billy Kahora.
