This film adaptation of Shakespeare's Hamlet combines elements of Shakespeare's play with both legends and historical events from ancient and feudal China. The film is meant to be set in the 10th century CE towards the end of the rule of the Tang Dynasty, during the so-called Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period of Chinese history. The events in the film, however, also show many similarities with those from the reign of China's only female emperor Wu Zeitan (624-705 CE): Wu Zeitan was a concubine of two emperors (father and then his son), the second of whom she married, and after his death she ruled in
