novellaand treatise writer, Giovan Battista Giraldi Cinzio was born of noble origin in November of 1504 in Ferrara. In 1529 he began teaching as lecturer of philosophy while still a student in the College of Arts and Medicine at his hometown university, where he later became professor of rhetoric (1541-1563). Up until this second appointment, he also practiced in the medical profession. In 1547, Ercole II d’Este, ruler of Ferrara, nominated him as ducal secretary and court historian. Giraldi Cinzio maintained his dual position until 1561 when Ercole’s successor, Alfonso II d’Este, replaced him with Giovan Battista Pigna. One of Giraldi’s most promising students, Pigna accused his teacher and mentor of plagiarism soon after they both published separate treatises…
