Gamel Woolsey was born Elizabeth Gammell Woolsey, on the plantation Breeze Hill in Aiken, South Carolina, on 28 May 1897(?). Her father, William Walton Woolsey, had come south with his family from New England for health reasons and, after his wife's death, he married Elizabeth (Bessie) Gammell, thus gaining entry into Charleston aristocracy.
