Ferrol Sams Jr., a practicing medical doctor in Fayetteville, Georgia, took up writing as a late supplement to his career, initially as a means of preserving stories of his childhood for his own progeny. His writing, much of it semi-autobiographical, very quickly generated a national following and within a decade he had created a body of work that placed him as a minor but noteworthy voice in contemporary southern literature. Sams was best known for his recreation of the early twentieth century American South, with novels and stories of close-knit families and communities.
