Martin Walser has arguably been Germany’s most productive writer of international acclaim since World War II. There are few gaps in his bibliography which began in the late 1940s and early 1950s with short stories for post-war magazines and radio plays for regional broadcasters. His first book, a collection of short stories entitled

Ein Flugzeug über dem Haus

[

A Plane Flew over the House

], appeared in 1955. His most recent work, the novel

Angstblüte

[

Angst Blossom

], came out in 2006. In the half century between the slim debut volume of short stories and the publication of

Angstblüte

lie a further 18 novels and novellas, a dozen stage plays, several volumes of stories, collected essays on literature, culture, and society, diaries, and many other texts which defy genre classification.
