Stanley Nyamfukudza was born in Wedza, Eastern Zimbabwe, and attended the Bernard Mzeki and Fletcher High schools and the University of Rhodesia during the colonial period of the country's history. In 1973, he was imprisoned by the colonial authorities for protesting against racism at the university campus, and had to leave the country following the banning from campus of most student ex-prisoners. Like the fellow Zimbabwean writer Dambudzo Marechera, he ended up studying English Literature at the University of Oxford, England.

Both Marechera and Nyamfukudza felt uncomfortable and alienated at Oxford. Unlike Marechera, however, Nyamfukudza graduated. After working as a labourer and a clerk in London, he returned home and became a managing editor with College Press Publishers in 1988,
