Rahul Varma is a Montreal-based playwright, essayist, and community activist. Varma was born in Narion, India in 1952. As a new immigrant to Canada in the 1980s, his early work was nourished and entirely supported from within Canada's South Asian community. His early full-length plays, such as

Bhanumati Ka Pitara

and

Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani

, were written in Hindustani and performed by and for community members.

In 1986, he became artistic director of Teesri Duniya Theatre – a company that he co-founded in 1981 to cater to the needs of Montreal's South Asian communities. In 1998, as part of Teesri Duniya's evolving mandate, Varma launched the quarterly magazine, alt.theatre: cultural diversity and the stage. Varma continues as the company's artistic director, and today Teesri Duniya Theatre
