Mary Webb, christened Mary Gladys Meredith (25 March 1881 – 8 October 1927), was born in Leighton, Shropshire, England. Her most famous novel was
Precious Bane(1924) which won the prestigious literary prize Prix Femina Vie Heureuse for 1924-5. She wrote six novels in total (one of which was unfinished), poetry, short stories, and nature essays. She lived most of her life within the county of Shropshire and set all of her novels there.
Webb was born at Leighton Lodge in 1881 and was the first child of George Edward Meredith and his wife, Sarah Alice. Her father ran a small boarding-school at the house where he taught boys before they went on to public schools and universities.
