The earliest extant record of the life of Phillip Stubbes is a license documenting his marriage to Katherine Emmes, the daughter of William and Katherine Emmes of London, dated 6 September 1586. Married at fifteen, Katherine died of a fever four and a half years later, six weeks after bearing their first child, John. An entry in the parish registers of Burton-upon-Trent notes the baptism of their son on 17 November 1590. A second entry in this register claims that Katherine was buried the same day she died, on 14 December 1590. Interlined in a different ink and hand, it seems likely that this information was added at a later date, perhaps by one of Stubbes's readers, and is not an accurate record of burial.
