Elizabeth Edwina Smither has long been recognised as an important New Zealand poet, and she has also published novels and collections of short stories. Her accolades have included the following: in 1987 and 1992, a Scholarship in Letters; in 1988 the Literary Fund Travelling Bursary; in 1989, the Lilian Ida Smith Award for non-fiction; in 1990, 2000 and 2018 the New Zealand Book Awards for Poetry; in 2002-3 the Te Mata Poet Laureate position; in 2004, being made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM); in 2008 the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in poetry; and also being made an Honorary Doctor of Literature by the University of Auckland; in 2014 the New Zealand Society of Authors Janet Frame Memorial Award; and in 2016 the Sarah Broom Poetry Prize.
