Writer, editor, historian, and sometime English professor, Sir Charles G. D. Roberts (1860-1943) is considered one of Canada's early Men of Letters. Known as the “Father of Canadian Poetry,” he forms part of the Confederation Group of poets, which included his younger cousin Bliss Carman, Archibald Lampman, Duncan Campbell Scott, and William Wilfred Campbell. He published ten major collections of verse during his lifetime. He was also an accomplished novelist and short story writer, and produced over two dozen novels and short-story collections; among his fiction, he is perhaps best known as one of the creators of the modern animal story.
