Henry Handel Richardson was the pen-name of Florence Lindesay Richardson who wrote all of her novels and short stories as an Australian expatriate in a style of European literary realism (Stendhal, Flaubert, Zola), although most of her subjects are not European. Her pseudonym, and her residence in Germany and England from 1888 until her death at Fairlight, Sussex, on 20 March 1946, occluded her identity and delayed her recognition as an Australian writer. She was hardly known in her own country until the international success of

Ultima Thule

in 1929, which that year won her the Australian Literature Society’s Gold Medal.
