Frederick Pohl was born in 1919, and has had a long and celebrated career as a science fiction writer, agent and editor. His career falls into three main phases: in the 1950s, particularly in collaboration with Cyril M. Kornbluth (a fellow member of the SF writers group The Futurians, who also featured Isaac Asimov), Pohl was a prolific short-story and novel writer, whose stories have a particularly satirical and dystopian flavour, from

The Space Merchants

(1953), to

Gladiator-at-Law

(1955), to the more eccentric

Wolfbane

(1959). In the 1960s, he was editor of the US science fiction magazines

Galaxy

and

World of If

and in this role had an important contribution to the field of science fiction, although it placed considerable limitations on his productivity as a writer. On giving up theseā€¦
