Lorine Faith Niedecker was born May 12, 1903 to Henry and Daisy (Kunz) Niedecker. She was born on Blackhawk Island near Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. An only child, she spent most of her childhood in Fort Atkinson or Blackhawk Island where the Rock River joins Lake Koshkonong, and where her parents ran an inn called the Fountain House which Niedecker’s mother Daisy had inherited from her parents.
During Niedecker’s childhood, her parents’ relationship became increasingly strained, which was difficult for Niedecker. Niedecker’s mother, Daisy, was religious and reticent. Daisy also gradually lost her hearing, which contributed to her aloof demeanor. Eventually Henry and Daisy’s marriage failed. They remained married but lived in nearby houses.
