Most surveys of the contemporary American novel that were published between the late-1950s and the mid-1980s would have included a chapter on Wright Morris. Morris was prolific, authoring 20 novels, six collections of short fiction, four volumes of his own photographs and accompanying text, six volumes of essays on literature, and four volumes of autobiography. In 1957, Morris received a National Book Award for his ninth novel,
The Field of Vision, and in 1981, he received an American Book Award for his last novel,
