Anishinaubae author Basil H. Johnston, the eldest of Rufus and Mary’s [nee Tobey /Lafreniere] five children, was born on 13 July 1929 at Parry Island, located on the eastern shore of Georgian Bay in south central Ontario, Canada. Johnston and his family stayed at Parry Island, his mother’s reserve, until, in 1936, they relocated to his father’s reserve, Cape Croker, on the western side of Georgian Bay. Johnston remained at Cape Croker where he received primary education until 1939, when he and his youngest sister Gladys were removed to residential school (note 1): Johnston to St. Peter Claver’s Residential School for Indian Boys, later renamed the Garnier Residential School, and Gladys to St. Joseph’s Residential School for Indian Girls located in Spanish, Ontario.
