Joan Chandos Baez, the second of three daughters born to a Scottish mother and a Mexican father, has enjoyed a long and fruitful career as a performer and writer. She first came to prominence during the American folk music revival movement of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and became one of the most popular and significant of the movement’s female artists. Though her career has experienced natural fluctuations, her popularity and significance have never truly waned, and she has remained a central and influential figure in the popular music scene of the United States and beyond.
