Galen was a Greek physician and prolific medical writer working in the late first century and early second century AD. He became known as the ‘prince of physicians’ and had a major influence on European and Islamic medicine from antiquity through until after the Renaissance in the fifteen and sixteenth centuries.
Galen’s works covered all aspects of the body and the study of medicine, including anatomy, physiology, diagnosis, prognosis, pathology, therapy, pharmacology, surgery, ethics, medical education and medical history. There are over 170 fully and partly extant treatises attributed to him (although the authenticity of many of these have been questioned).
