Few readers of Indian-English Literature are familiar with the works of the twentieth-century poet and novelist Joseph Furtado, who was born in the tiny state of Goa on the west coast of India. None of his works is now in print, and histories of Indian-English Literature generally contain no more than a small paragraph on his work. Surprisingly, even most anthologies that include his work make no mention of Furtado in their section on the Life and Works of the poets included.

The son of Vicente Cesar and Maria Conceicao de Rocha, Joseph Furtado was born in 1872 at Furtadovaddo, Pilerne, Bardez, in Goa, then under Portuguese rule. The name of his birthplace is interesting since it indicates the importance of the Furtados who had settled in that particular Goan vaddo or ‘ward’. It is
