Málfríður Einarsdóttir was born in Borgarfjörður on 23 October 1899. Her life was marked by hardship and struggle. On the day she was born, her twin brother passed away, and her mother died a week later. Her father, Einar, felt unable to care for her, and she was subsequently sent to live with her grandmother and paternal aunts. Málfríður grew up in modest circumstances when opportunities for women were scarce, formal education was often aimless, and traveling abroad was rare. Throughout her life, she suffered from illness, having contracted tuberculosis at a young age, which nearly claimed her life. From an early age her thoughts turned to writing, though Iceland at the time offered few female role models in this field.
Nevertheless, Málfríður remained dedicated to writing
