Páll Jónsson, generally known as Staðarhóls-Páll, was born around 1530, the son of Jón Magnússon “the great” at Svalbarð and his wife Ragnheiður “red socks” Pétursdóttir. His older brother was Magnús “the elegant” Jónsson and his younger brother was Jón Jónsson the attorney general (lögmaður) of North and West Iceland. Páll Jónsson was educated in Munkaþverá and probably also abroad, and has in recent decades been celebrated as one of the most educated and gifted men of his age and is now considered one of the most important poets of the sixteenth century.

However, there are no contemporary sources that mention Páll’s poetry; the oldest source to refer to him as a poet is Jón ‘the learned’ Guðmundsson (c. 1574–1658), and most of Páll’s poetry
