Juan Pérez de Montalbán was a close disciple of the prolific Lope de Vega and, whilst much less-studied than his mentor, was a successful playwright in his own right. He produced over fifty plays, as well as short stories, a biography of Saint Patrick and a miscellany. We know he was born in Madrid, but the year of his birth is subject to debate. Critics have traditionally suggested 1602, though eminent Montalbán scholar Victor Dixon more recently argued that July or August of 1601 is more probable (Dixon, 2013, p.153). His father was the Madrid-based Alonso Pérez de Montalbán, one of the most successful printer-booksellers of the day, who would in 1604 be named
