Of major national and international standing, Laura Restrepo is a key figure of contemporary Colombian literature, and, more broadly, Latin American and world literatures. In a range of literary texts that straddle fictional and journalistic genres, Restrepo explores Colombia’s often violent recent past as well as Mexican and Argentine history, and more recently, themes of contemporary global significance.
Restrepo was born in 1950 in the Colombian capital, Bogotá, into a middle-class family of abundant cultural and intellectual capital. After studying literature and philosophy at the prestigious private Universidad de los Andes, she taught at the nation’s top-ranking public university, the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
