Antoine Galland was a French Orientalist who is mostly known for his adaptation of
Mille et Une Nuits[
One Thousand and One Nights]. He was also the editor of d’Herbelot’s monumental
Bibliothèque orientale, which may be considered the most ambitious work of European scholarship on the Islamic world until the nineteenth century. Galland devoted his whole life to gathering knowledge on the Orient, and he achieved an enduring literary fame thanks to a work which satisfied the taste of the fashionable public of his time. Hence the question: what was the identity of the writer who, in addition to bringing a major contribution to the literary fashion of the “Oriental tale”, was a renowned scholar of the Orient?
