The Icelandic poet Jón Thoroddsen was born in Ísafjörður on 18 February 18 1898, the son of the poet Theodóra Thoroddsen and political leader Skúli Thoroddsen, son of novelist Jón Thoroddsen. He graduated from Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík in 1918, studied at the University of Copenhagen in 1919, and completed the law exam at the University of Iceland in 1924.

Jón was unsuccessful in his effort to gain a parliamentary seat in 1923, receiving 31% of the vote in the Norður-Ísafjarðarsýsla district. His party, Alþýðuflokkurinn [The Social Democratic Party], eventually won this constituency in 1933, so one may wonder if Jón would have continued his career as a modernist author or become a politician like his father, Skúli Thoroddsen, one of the most prominent leaders of the
