Einar Kárason is a prolific and versatile Icelandic novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter, and biographer. The subject matters of many of his works can be described as “history from below” – the stories of those from the lower strata of society whose voices have traditionally not been heard. In this fashion, the author memorialises other aspects of the lives of Icelanders through the ages than public or national memory modes have emphasized. He is often described as a master storyteller, and that is a strong feature in many of his works – his ability to tell engaging, funny, poignant, and thrilling stories from a variety of situations, time periods, and environments.
