Winsome Pinnock, often referred to as “the godmother of Black British playwrighting” (Kolawole 2003), is one of the most prolific and successful Black playwrights in Britain.
She was born in Islington, London, in 1961, to Jamaican parents who migrated to Britain for work. Her mother used to work as a cleaner while her father worked at a meat market. As a child, she developed an interest in theatre through the Inner London Educational authority, which organised school visits to the theatre. She also attended the Anna Scher Children’s Theatre and was a member of the Old Vic Young Theatre. She graduated with a B.A. in English and Drama at Goldsmiths, University of London, and then continued her studies with an MA in Modern Literature. After finishing her university studies, she joined
