Nona Fernández, Chilean author, actor and screenwriter born in 1971, was only two years old at the time of the military coup led by General Augusto Pinochet, and in her late teens when the country returned to democracy by plebiscite in 1988. In her writing, Fernández represents a generational experience—one that is marked by the powerful traumatic memories that she inherits and the difficult task of piecing together and making narrative from disjointed and hazily remembered fragments of the past.
