Born in the port city of Durrës (Albania) in 1960, Elvira Dones fled her country in 1988, while it was still under the despotic rule of its communist regime, to join her then partner, now husband, in the Italian canton of Switzerland. She moved to the United States in 2004, where she lived until 2015 when she returned to Switzerland. A renowned journalist while in Albania, Dones has now become an important voice in transnational literature. Her works stand out for their unique style, a blend of fictional narration and journalistic investigation into systemic corruption, discrimination, and exploitation in Albania and Western Europe.
