Any discussion about Bangladeshi fiction would be incomplete without Akhtaruzzaman Elias, one of the foremost fiction writers of Bangladesh. Elias’ writings span a vast canvas, including historical events such as the fakir-sanyasi revolt, the Tebhaga movement, the Partition, the mass uprising of 1969, and post-liberation Bangladesh. Poverty, the struggle of masses, political consciousness at the grassroots level, and class conflicts are some of the themes he dwells upon. He attracts serious readers who are not afraid of his powerful, albeit difficult, language. The features that make his writings distinctive and set him apart include his use of magic realism, innovative narrative techniques, and local dialect, as well as mingling the unsavory and the pleasant with amazing dexterity.
