Syed Waliullah (1922-1971), novelist, short story writer and playwright, was born on 15 August 1922 at Sholashahar in Chittagong to Syed Ahmadullah and Nasim Ara Khatun. As a civil servant under the British Raj, Syed Ahmadullah was posted to different small towns in Bengal: Mymensingh, Feni, Chittagong, Krishnanagar, Kurigram. His family would accompany him on his several postings. As a result, Waliullah experienced rural life in Bengal from close. When Waliullah was twelve, his mother passed away, leaving him and an older brother behind. A few years later, his father re-married, a Zohra Khatun, from Karatia.
