Life

Little is known about Chaeremon of Alexandria (C. thereafter). He was likely born at the beginning of the first century CE and must have been dead by 96 CE, since Martial 9.56 addresses him with bantering lines as he often does with no longer living individuals; cf. Schwyzer (1932) 9. According to the Suda (s.v. Dionysius of Alexandria), he was superintendent of the school of grammarians of Alexandria and possibly ἐπιστάτης of the Museum. The Suda (s.v. Alexander the Aegean) also provides information about his role as tutor of young Nero, jointly with the peripatetic Alexander the Aegean, starting from the late 40s or the early 50s. More specifically, it is unclear whether C.’s summoning to Rome for this imperial office preceded or followed the year 49 CE, in which case
