Giulia Kapp Salvini was undoubtedly a unique example among the Italian upper-class women of her time. She was a nonconformist who married twice in a state where divorce did not exist, becoming a case study for lawyers. She traveled widely and lived abroad, but was also sensitive to women’s struggles for their rights in her mother country.

The daughter of Cavalier Antonio Salvini and Countess Isotta Porti, Giulia Kapp Salvini was born in the city of Ancona, in central Italy, on March 18, 1851. Her father died when she was only nine. At the age of nineteen, on July 15, 1870, she married Herman von Bremen, a German merchant trading in Ancona. In 1877 she abandoned her husband and went to live in Michigan, USA, where she remarried in Detroit on August 2, 1879. Her second husband, Karl
