Boaventura Cardoso (1944 - ) is an Angolan writer and politician and one of the founding members of the Union of Angolan Writers (União dos Escritores Angolanos). After having written poetry and short stories, since the 1990s he has devoted himself, with much success, to the novel form, even while pursuing a major political career as minister of culture (from 1981 to 1990 and from 2002 to 2008) and ambassador to France and Italy, among other responsibilities. His poetic prose is influenced by his profound interest in anthropology and bantu cultural forms. His writing constantly weaves together Portuguese and Kimbundu vocabulary and syntax, pursuing the work of linguistic and literary creation initiated by his fellow writer and major source of inspiration, José Luandino Vieira.
