A member of the Italian Neorealist literary tradition, Francesco Jovine was an energetically active author during the period prior to and following World War II. In addition to composing works of fiction, he was a prolific journalist and literary critic. Ethical-political concerns become increasingly prevalent in his writing and drive his literary realism.
Jovine was born into a simple farming family in 1902 in the small city of Guardialfiera in Italy’s central region of Molise. Despite the impoverished condition of Francesco’s immediate family, his parents were fortunate enough to possess in their home a small library to which he had unlimited access.
