Fatima Mernissi re-opened the door for women to rethink the interpretation of the Islamic primary scripture, the Qur’an, leading to social and attitudinal change toward gender justice and women’s agency. She was born September 27, 1940 in Fez, Morocco, and died November 30, 2015 in Rabat, Morocco. She addressed multiple social issues in her native Morocco and was one of the best known feminist scholar-activists of the contemporary Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The impact of her work spans beyond the MENA region, despite challenges to her eclectic, critical approach and to her commitments to social change.
