Remedios Varo i Uranga, born in Spain but most associated with Mexico where she lived in exile, is usually identified with the Surrealist movement. Although she is mainly known as a painter, a fact illustrated by the inscription on her grave “Remedios Varo, Pintora”, her many other artistic interests and outputs allow us to understand her from a wider interartistic angle including her experiments with writing. This interest in writing may also be seen as derived from her surrealist commitment, particularly given the strong relationship between poetry and painting in the Surrealist movement as Eva Cortés Giner acknowledges (2013). It is also one that is shared with other female artists at the time, namely her friend Leonora Carrington (1917-2011).
