The texts by Cuban cultural theorist and anthropologist Fernando Ortiz are reference points for non-Eurocentric approaches to Latin-American and Caribbean political, economic and cultural history. Born in Havana in 1881, Ortiz spent his childhood and early youth in the Balearic Islands. After studying Law at the University of Havana, he returned to Spain, where he graduated as a lawyer from the University of Barcelona, and obtained the degree of Doctor in Law in Madrid in 1901.
A comparative reading of the works published by Fernando Ortiz at the early stage of his career and those conceived from the 1920s, shows his evolution towards a cultural and more inclusive approach to both ethnicity and national identity.
