The Spanish historian Friar Iñigo Abbad y Lasierra has been credited with writing Puerto Rico’s first history book. A well-educated man, he wrote
Historia geográfica, civil y natural de la isla de San Juan Bautista de Puerto Rico[Geographic, Civil and Natural History of the Island of Saint John the Baptist of Puerto Rico] (1788) with a view to correcting mistakes made by previous writers and to propose solutions to a series of socioeconomic problems faced by the island.
Abbad y Lasierra was born in 1745 to a noble family in Estadilla, Spain. He had ten siblings, including an older brother named Manuel who was an honorary member of the Real Academia Española [Royal Spanish Academy] and held important positions within the Catholic Church.
