María Luisa Puga was born in Mexico City in 1944. From a very early age she knew that she wanted to be a writer and an early encounter with the

prompted her to keep a personal diary. In those days it functioned as a replacement for the mother figure that she had tragically lost at the age of nine: “es como si ese diario fuera mi mamá, a la que recurro para acusar al mundo de todas las cosas que me hacen” [it is as though that diary was my mother to whom I resort to blame the world for all the things it does to me] (my own translation) (Urrutia, 2008: 66).

However, in Mexico she did not seem to find the space and language to be the writer she wanted to be and she left her native country to spend ten years travelling in Europe and Africa. With her diplomat
