Łucja Rautenstrauchowa (b. 1798, d. 1886), the Polish author of sentimental romances and travelogues, was born Barbara Joanna Paulina Łucja Giedroyć. Her mother was Karolina née Borzymowska (1766-1858). Interestingly, Barbara only became known as Łucja after 1812, a year after Łucja Franciszka Tyszkiewicz, her mother’s close friend, was murdered. Her father was General Romuald Tadeusz Giedroyć (1750-1824), a friend of Empress Josephine. Łucja had two brothers: Józef Stefan Franciszek Ksawery (1787-1855), who fought at Waterloo, had his land confiscated after the 1830 November Uprising, and was forced to emigrate; and Aleksander Konstanty Julian (1805-1844), Secretary of State to the Commonwealth of Poland and Chamberlain at the Russian court.
