 [The Italian] (2014) which won the 2015 prestigious International Prize for Arab Fiction (also known as the Arabic Booker). The importance of the Prize, al-Mabkhout contends, resides in its capacity to bring "the Arab novel international exposure that was missing" as it opens venues for Arab writers "to surpass the boundaries that were blocking Arab literature from the world" (Interview by Karen Leigh). What he finds more "exciting" and gratifying, however, is the reception of his novel at home.…
