Claudio Grisancich is Trieste’s greatest living poet, primarily for his poetry in Triestino, though he has also published poetry in Italian and written plays and radio dramas in both Triestino and the national language. Born in Trieste in 1939, Grisancich has lived all his life, including the difficult war years, in his native city. Like the American poet Wallace Stevens, he was employed by a large insurance company, serving until retirement in the company’s press office. A graduate of the University of Trieste, Grisancich is a widower and the father of one daughter.
Grisancich began writing poetry at a very early age, exclusively, at first, in Triestino. His first book, Noi vegnaremo [“We Are Coming”], contains poems written between 1951 and 1965, when the poet was between twelve
